Back in February our Session added a new position, an Elder for Cultural Engagement. A young adult named Will Ford was ordained and given the task of reaching out to other young folks in the community, spiritual-but-not-religious neighbors, and pretty much anyone in town who is not already connected to the church. He addressed music first (more ‘secular’ anthems in worship, that hopefully appeal and connect with new visitors concerned about ossified organized religion) and then wanted to create a visual representation of our motto, so that people saw what we stood for, before they ever came inside. So, he took David’s original banner, added some colors and images, and hung it on our sanctuary door. We posted a picture on Facebook and within a couple days, our little congregation of 50 members has had over 3300 views! The conversations are already happening throughout town, and we look forward to the spirit that this engenders. Even if it never draws in a new ‘member’, we firmly believe that the message softens hearts of all traditions, and we deeply hope that whatever new thing God is doing for us and the world will be blessed by this small gesture.
